Assistant General Counsel - Private Bank 

Citizens Bank is seeking a highly motivated, solutions-oriented attorney to support its growing and dynamic Private Banking business. This role provides broad legal support for deposit and lending products serving high net worth individuals, families, and their related business interests, as well as associated services and operations.

The Assistant General Counsel will work closely with business leaders, legal subject matter experts, and operational partners to deliver practical, business-focused legal advice. The long-term vision for this role is to develop into a trusted, go-to legal advisor for Private Bank initiatives and client-facing opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor for Private Bank lending, deposit, and family office–oriented products and services. 

  • Partner closely with management, business teams, operations, and legal colleagues on new initiatives, including third-party platform strategies, complex problem-solving, and escalated client matters. 

  • Monitor and assess changes in the legal and regulatory landscape; research, analyze, and provide sound legal guidance related to existing and evolving financial products and services. 

  • Advise business, Risk, Compliance, and other functional partners on strategic initiatives, contract interpretation and negotiation, loan and deal structuring, internal audits, regulatory examinations, and dispute resolution. 

  • Manage external counsel, when approved, in support of specific projects or initiatives.

  • The confidence to critically examine the status quo as appropriate, bring fresh and innovative thinking and be outspoken, when necessary, coupled with strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a highly collaborative team player with a positive attitude, growth mindset, good sense of humor and ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • A background in consumer or commercial lending.

Qualifications, Education, Certifications and/or Other Professional Credentials:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) with strong academic credentials; admission to at least one U.S. bar required. 

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department. 

  • Experience with banking and lending products supporting high net worth clients, including consumer and commercial lending, deposits, and/or investment-related products. 

  • Familiarity with the consumer banking regulatory environment and general banking operational considerations.

Hours & Work Schedule

  • Hours per Week: 40
  • Work Schedule: 8 AM-5 PM

Pay Transparency 

The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $200,000 per year, plus an opportunity to earn an annual discretionary bonus. Actual pay is based on various factors including but not limited to the work location, and relevant skills and experience.
