How I Grow Here: Learning isn’t always scripted
At Citizens, we recognize everyone’s career journey is unique. We encourage colleagues to follow their interests and curiosity to explore new opportunities within Citizens when they’re ready for the next chapter. With programs, upskilling and networking opportunities, advice and guidance, you can build the career you want with us. In 2024, almost 31% of colleagues accepted new roles internally.
Justin, a Citizens Teller in Beacon, NY, turned every mentorship and learning opportunity into a catalyst for growth, proving that curiosity and connection can lead to a successful career.
Learning isn't always scripted
That’s always been true for me, long before I joined Citizens. When I was hired as a Teller over a year ago, I knew I wanted to make the most of every opportunity to learn and connect. Networking is more than just a skill or something I was ‘taught’ to do, it’s a mindset.
Having my sister Kiera here, a Business Support Manager at Citizens, has been such a bonus. Early on, she shared the inside scoop and encouraged me to explore beyond my immediate team. Her advice helped me realize how building relationships across the organization can shape your career in unexpected ways. (It’s possible she’s smarter than me, but I’m never going to openly admit that!)
One of the most impactful connections I’ve made was with Krish Swamy, our Chief Data & Analytics Officer. I reached out after noticing his name linked to a data and analytics training called DataCamp, which I was using at the time and closely aligned with what I'm studying in school. I wanted to learn how those concepts apply in real-world banking and how analytics drives decision-making here. Our conversations opened my eyes to how different parts of the business work together and why understanding the bigger picture matters. Krish shared insights on leadership and adaptability that stuck with me; things like staying curious, asking better questions, and never being afraid to raise your hand for something new. Those talks weren’t just about the job; they were about mindset.
I recently connected with a new mentor in Treasury, Mike, through Citizens Talent Matters. Even though the relationship is still new, it’s already been a game-changer. We cover everything from technical skills to career strategy. What’s exciting is how much it ties back to what I’m learning in school, like finance concepts, risk management, and problem-solving. Mike helps me bridge theory and practice while encouraging me to think about the kind of role I want after graduation. I’m looking for a place where I can keep learning, contribute meaningfully, and eventually pay it forward by mentoring others.
My biggest learning is that growth doesn’t happen alone, it happens through people.
Learning isn’t always scripted. Sometimes you have to figure things out on the fly. I remember the first time I helped a client apply for a credit card while working as a teller. Both bankers were busy, and the customer in front of me didn’t want to wait. I had never done it before, but I jumped in, navigated the system, and learned as I went. It wasn’t perfect, but it taught me that being present and willing to try matters. That mindset, doing what’s best for the customer and the team, has stuck with me.
Balancing work and school isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Every day, I see how what I’m learning in class, like leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving, comes to life here. Each challenge, conversation, and mentor helps me grow and build meaningful connections, not just climb a ladder. That’s what keeps me excited for what’s ahead.
