Leadership With Purpose
At Citizens, leadership is about more than results. It's about purpose, empowerment, and building teams that grow alongside the customers and communities we serve. We recently sat down with Paul Casey, Head of Citizens Wealth Management, to talk about his leadership philosophy, his belief in empowerment at every level, and how purpose shows up in his work.
How do you define leadership?
"For me, leadership starts with empowerment. I don't believe leadership is tied to title or tenure. Everyone can lead, regardless of role or how long they have been with the organization."
“Whether you’ve been here for two days or 30 years, everybody here can be a leader. Everybody should feel empowered.”
That belief shapes how Paul builds teams across Citizens Wealth Management. He focuses on creating clarity around vision and priorities so colleagues feel confident taking ownership and making decisions.
Why is empowerment so important to you as a leader?
Paul emphasizes alignment and shared accountability as key drivers of strong performance. Rather than trying to do everything at once, he encourages teams to focus on what matters most.
"We're all busy, and we all want more hours in the day. When people understand the mission and feel trusted to execute, work becomes more meaningful and more effective."
“We can't boil the ocean. We need to do what is in the best interest of our clients and continually improve as their needs evolve.”
How does your leadership philosophy connect to service?
"Service has always been an important part of how I view leadership. I believe leaders have a responsibility to show up for their communities and to support causes that matter to them."
That mindset is reflected in his long‑standing involvement with The Headstrong Project, a national nonprofit organization that provides stigma‑free mental health care for veterans, service members, and their families. Paul has served on the organization’s board for more than a decade and currently serves as Chair.
Last November, Paul ran the New York City Marathon as part of Team Citizens to help raise awareness and support for The Headstrong Project.
“When the mission is this clear, the miles feel different. Running with purpose changes how you show up.”
How does supporting the veteran community influence how you lead?
"The military community embodies many of the qualities I value in leadership. Accountability, teamwork, and a strong sense of purpose."
Supporting veterans as an ally is not separate from how he leads. It reinforces his belief that people do their best work when they feel supported, respected, and connected to something larger than themselves.
That perspective carries into how he thinks about culture, talent, and growth across Citizens Wealth Management.
What do you want people to know about working at Citizens?
Paul's message is simple. Leadership is not reserved for a few. It is something everyone can practice, every day. Here, that means working in an environment where colleagues are trusted to take ownership, encouraged to lead where they are, and supported as they grow.
“When people feel empowered and aligned around a shared purpose, that is when teams, and individuals, really thrive.”
