Underwriter II (UW) is responsible for the daily underwriting of Business Lending Products within the Citizens Bank footprint up to a Total Credit Limit (TCL) of $1,000,000.  The application decisions are made in a centralized environment (RELAY) utilizing Score and Streamline underwriting and credit decision approach.  All application decisions are within authorized credit authority limits.  The UW also provides support to field personnel as it relates to the conditions, rate, risk mitigated with SBA, financial analysis and overall lending decision.

Portfolio Manager II (PM) monitors the risk in the Retail portfolio for relationships with TCL up to $1,000,000.  The PM reviews transactions that fail automated rules within RELAY and assess the customers credit worthiness.   Early and accurate identification and action with borrowers on the verge of or experiencing financial stress or hardship is integral to minimizing credit losses.  The PM is expected to interact with internal and external customers by phone and email.  Retail lending authority granted up to $1,000,000 to facilitate independent credit decision making.  Exercising sound credit judgment using delegated authority is critical.  This role is also used for the team in Wholesale Credit that manages Borrowing Base and Standalone Credit Card customers.  The team monitors the Borrowing Base process and enables customer LOC availability through analysis and review of borrowing base data.  The Credit Card monitoring is administered on through a monthly monitoring process.

Primary responsibilities include

UW -Underwrite business credit applications independently using sound judgment.  Single Retail lending authority up to $1,000,000 can be granted for this position.  All decisions are made while adhering to the Business Banking Credit Policy.  The UW is required to review all underwriting criteria, collateral, interest rate, fees and specific due diligence required for final approval.  All exceptions to policy must be properly approved by the Underwriting Manager.  Credit reviews include analysis of external personal credit and business credit bureau reports and scores for the business and guarantors and all associated deposit accounts.  Meet production expectations as measured by goal setting.

PM - Underwrite business loans for annual review using the Retail Exception Managed credit policy.  Annual review is an integral piece of the overall risk management of the retail portfolio.  Annual reviews must be completed in a timely manner and in accordance with all policy requirements.  Exceptions to policy must be properly approved by the underwriting manager.  Reviews include analysis of external credit reports and  scores for the business and personal guarantors, performance of the loan and all associated deposit accounts, industry events, and negative trigger events reported by outside vendors.  PM uses independent lending authority to execute credit decisions generally with total credit limit up to $1,000,000.  The Borrowing Base PM does not generally maintain lending authority or prepare annual reviews.  The role is highly geared for monthly collateral analysis and risk mitigation in the Exception Managed portfolio.  This PM can prepare Wholesale annual review as part of a career development plan.

UW - Responsible for working with Business Banking Operations Closing to move approved applications through the process for quick closings.  Second looks applications are reviewed/discussed with the sales force, Credit Product Manager or closing team.  The sales colleague may bring new information that can help approve a loc/loan request that was previously declined.

PM - Off-cycle monitoring for the retail portfolio.   Must react in a timely manner to derogatory credit alerts on customers.  Analysis to include review of external credit reports and sores for the business and personal guarantors, performance of the line and all associated deposits accounts, in addition to review of the negative credit information.   All decisions must be made in accordance with the Business Banking Credit Policy with PM exercising independent lending authority generally up to $1,000,000 in total credit limit.  Interact with internal colleagues and customers when appropriate to assess credit worthiness.  Also involved in managing hard maturity renewals for term loans which involves active engagement with sales colleagues and customer

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of business lending with exhibited competency in structuring the appropriate type of loan to a business need, 
  • Understand and apply credit policy, adhere to departmental procedures, identify areas of risk beyond acceptable set levels,
  • Recommend appropriate restructure of loans not performing in accordance with acceptable underwriting standards as outlined in credit policy.   
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered as an alternative to formal degree program completion. 

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree is Preferred

Hours & Work Schedule

  • Hours per Week: 40
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday: 8:00PM - 5:00PM
