Ready to Support Financial Empowerment

During Financial Literacy Month and throughout the year, we’re committed to helping our communities meet their financial goals. Through our Citizens Helping Citizens Manage Money Program, we’re donating $2 million to financial empowerment programs this year. Our contributions will provide members of the community with the confidence and tools they need to help make informed financial decisions and build brighter futures.

Meet a few of our colleagues who delivered financial education workshops highlighting the benefits of budgeting, saving, building credit and more. The experience had a profound impact on them and the individuals they helped feel more confident in their financial acumen.

Tell us about a favorite moment in your volunteer experiences to date and why it stands out.
The moment I realized we can help many families and make dreams become realities. It was early in Covid and I understand how coming to a new country can be challenging never mind during a global pandemic. People needed help and I am blessed I was able to contribute in any way possible.

How would you describe “virtual” volunteering?
It would be an understatement to say it’s very rewarding. There aren’t words to describe the experience of helping consumers who want to better their current financial situation. They often want to pay it forward and take what they learned to help other families in their community.

My favorite moment to volunteer was when I was teaching third graders financial literacy. I watched their eyes light up when they understood ways to save, spend, and donate their money.

What advice do you have for colleagues looking to make a difference in their communities?
Just do it! There are opportunities everywhere, but especially within Citizens. There are always volunteer opportunities, now more than ever because we can do virtual volunteer events.

In 2019, I taught financial literacy classes for a local community organization. After class one day, a student said to me: "Thank you so much for doing this. I know you don't have to do it, but taking the time to speak with us and teach us about credit and how to better manage our finances has really been a big help." I will never forget the look in his eyes and the genuine gratitude he demonstrated. That is why I do what I do for the community.

What advice do you have for colleagues looking to make a difference in their communities?
Start now. Whether the activity is large or small, your help is always needed and appreciated. You can provide value to others in ways that you never knew by simply engaging and participating.
