As the Business Banking Operations Underwriters Group Manager, you will manage a team of Commercial Underwriters and Portfolio Managers (UW/PM), including those processing straightforward up to complex credits within complex corporate organizational structures, documentation and/or collateral structures. The individual must balance the need to add profitable credit business with the need to maintain acceptable credit quality. This role exercises sound credit judgment in the use of their Credit Approval Framework (CAF) individual credit authority. This role also assures that all UWs/PMs are trained and kept up to date on Commercial & Business Banking credit policies and issues affecting the general economy. You will actively ensure compliance with federal regulations and Citizens’ policies and also be involved in assessing, developing and implementing credit and compliance policies. The Business Banking Operations Underwriters Group Manager is also responsible for efficient use of resources that maximizes production while minimizing response times to clients. This role also designs and monitors internal systems to assure that all assigned work and ongoing monitoring is completed in a timely manner and in a way that complies with all Citizens’ internal policies. This role prioritizes work that is assigned to the group, assures that work is appropriately distributed among the team members and is responsible for objective quality control of groups analytical and reporting work product to include accurate application of credit, risk, and other policies and practices required to effectively manage risk exposure and loss to Citizens. This role will also manage the performance management and development process for all direct and indirect reports. Role may include management of colleagues in remote locations.
Primary responsibilities include
- Ensures that direct report work is quality controlled and compliant with Citizens Commercial credit policy.
- Demonstrates superior practical and conceptual knowledge of credit and risk analysis. Is able to directly manage PM/UW around all aspects of complex credit situations in the portfolio.
- Demonstrates sound judgment using exercise of individual lending authority. Reviews a sampling of credits decisioned by UW/PM under their single signature authority.
- Highly capable of developing, negotiating and communicating loan structures.
- Effectively interacts with credit product managers, credit, credit review and other Citizens partners to ensure smooth working process across area of responsibility.
- Works in partnership with RMs, CPMs, and CRM to respond to deteriorating credit conditions within the portfolio that may warrant transfer to the work out area.
- Possesses expert level knowledge related to credit policy and practices across the entire portfolio for particular business units, state or region. Evaluates findings from credit review and other examining groups, providing responses as needed.
- People management: Focuses on building capability level of UWs/PMs and strengthening UW/PM work force capacity to ensure that staff resources and internal processes are optimized for efficient delivery and servicing of department product. Builds a bench of potential team members by meeting with potential candidates and referral sources, even when an opening does not exist. Oversees the performance management and development process. Conducts informal training and developmental sessions on credit topics.
- Actively coaches direct and indirect reports to enhance performance outcomes. Sets clear and measurable expectations with existing direct and indirect reports and with internal business partners. Exhibits strength in communicating organization and department goals and objectives.
- Internal colleague & external customer communication: Exhibits comprehensive written and verbal communication skills, strong presentation development and delivery skills, and shows high level of expertise when interacting with RM, CO, CPM and senior management when discussing credit structure and business risks. Proactively builds relationships both within department and across business units. Influences RM around credit decisions. Views credit situations from multiple angles and can debate the merits of a given credit situation and defend position.
- Actively engages with RMs, CPMs, senior management, credit officers, GRG officers, division executives, and other business unit leaders on progress, issues and challenges. Brings forth ideas, solutions and drives actions individually and with others to resolve business and customer challenges.
- Workflow management and oversight: Has direct oversight and responsibility for the outcomes of compliance and regulatory as well as credit reviews for particular portfolio.
- Manages the workflow to have work assigned promptly and to track the progress through the credit decision. Takes action to resolve issues that delay the underwriting process.
- Leads or participates in planning and implementing changes to policies or procedures that drives greater efficiency, reduces risk, or increases profitability.
Qualifications:
- 10 plus years commercial banking experience which may include business banking, middle market and/or specialty commercial banking, commercial banking administration, commercial client sales, commercial banking operations, commercial credit/risk oversight, and commercial loan documentation/funding/servicing.
- Exhibits strong level of knowledge of commercial sales, commercial products, credit, risk, and administration practices and processes. Skilled at maintaining good communication across business unit and broader organization.
- Skilled at developing and implementing both strategic and tactical solutions and systems in support of portfolio administration and business unit goals and objectives.
- Comprehensive verbal and written communication skills, able to multi task and function under pressure to meet deadlines, strong organizational skills, customer service, developed influencing and negotiation skills, experience in managing the day to day and annual performance and developmental activities for direct and in-direct reports from entry to expert level colleagues.
- Word, Excel, Power Point, spread sheet modeling, and presentation development and delivery skills. Advanced knowledge of different financial modeling systems and ability to coach others on use of internal systems that may include AFS, Dashboard, ORA, FaCT, and RELAY.
Education, Certifications or Additional Professional Credentials
- Bachelors Degree
- Preferred: Master's degree in Business administration, finance accounting and/or economics.

- Hours per Week: 40
- Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 AM - 5 PM
