Senior Credit Review Manager - Commercial Real Estate

The Senior Credit Review Manager position is a team member in the bank’s independent Credit Review function. The Credit Review team is an independent team reporting to the bank’s Audit Committee responsible for oversight of all bank lending activities. The Senior Credit Review Manager is responsible for the independent evaluation of borrower-level loan transactions, credit portfolios, and credit risk management practices throughout the bank’s Commercial Real Estate portfolio.     

As the Senior Credit Review Manager, you will be responsible for scoping, planning, managing, participating, and executing credit risk review assignments to verify ratings accuracy and outlook, to assess asset quality, and to provide an opinion with respect to risk management and appetite. You will add value by providing independent challenge and assurance, identifying issues and formulating practical solutions that can be tracked and monitored to resolve any deficiencies and helping reduce overall risk to the organization. The high profile nature of the role reflects the need for extensive interaction with senior management and staff, Credit Review senior management, Internal Audit, and Examiners. 

Primary responsibilities include

  • Undertake an independent, qualitative, and quantitative assessment of individual counterparties, facilities and portfolios including an assessment of the structure of facilities where Citizens maintains a risk relationship on either a committed or uncommitted basis.
  • Undertake a qualitative assessment of the risk management and credit stewardship of individual counterparties and portfolios including compliance with relevant credit policies as part of the Citizens Policy framework.
  • Plan and execute reviews as leader; interact with credit and business executives and staff, collect, and interpret findings, provide verbal feedback, and formulate written reports on findings with suitable action points.
  • Interact with credit and business executives, support review negotiations and escalate issues as appropriate including the handling of sensitive or tough messages.
  • Identify risk issues and make suitable recommendations to remediate or rectify deficiencies noted, improve business and risk processes, amend counterparty and macro risk appetite, and enhance policies, standards, and credit risk reporting.
  • Act as ambassador for Credit Review in all dealings with internal and external stakeholders to enhance the profile and reputation of the department including interaction with Regulators and Internal Audit.
  • Assist the Team Head with annual and quarterly planning, reporting, and budgeting.
  • Review individual credit transactions and business unit portfolios, assisting Business Unit Directors with more complex reviews.
  • Assess asset quality, loan structure, quality and accuracy of underwriting, identification of key risks, and overall evaluation of the ultimate support of the credit decision rendered.
  • Ensure accuracy of assigned credit risk and regulatory ratings and underlying rating model implementation.
  • Assess that loan transactions are within established bank credit policies, standards, and risk appetite.
  • Evaluate management oversight process, assign overall credit management and asset quality ratings, and formulate recommendations to proactively reduce credit risk and minimize potential credit losses.
  • Identify potential weaknesses and emerging trends at loan and portfolio levels.
  • Utilize influencing skills to resolve issues and agree to solutions prior to finalization of exam reports.
  • Incorporate findings and recommendations into written reports which are distributed to executive management and external regulatory bodies.
  • Define, lead, and manage strategic initiatives including Targeted Reviews and special projects as needed in support of achieving CR’s objectives. 
  • Develop collaborative relationships with Bank stakeholders; foster a positive work environment consistent with CFG’s values and CREDO. 

Qualifications, Education, Certifications and/or Other Professional Credentials

  • 10+ years of credit risk experience in one of these areas: credit review, credit sanctioning, loan structuring, and underwriting, with emphasis in commercial real estate space. Previous bank credit review or bank examiner experience is highly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of US regulatory rating framework and US regulatory requirements governing credit risk management, including origination, underwriting and portfolio management.
  • Experience and knowledge of PD and LGD rating model approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with an ability to synthesize complex messages for an executive audience. Experience preparing materials for and interacting with supervisory agencies, external auditors, and executives. Strong negotiation skills with ability to defend position in a constructive manner.
  • A high degree of professional maturity and emotional intelligence appropriate for interactions with external and internal constituents of all levels. A natural collaborator and culture carrier who can lead effectively amidst ambiguity. 
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment, lead others, and appropriately prioritize workload to ensure deadlines are met. 
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work independently in a geographically dispersed environment.
  • BA or BS degree required; MBA or other advanced degree or certification is a plus

Hours & Work Schedule

  • Hours per week: 40
  • Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Hybrid (minimum of three days per week in office)
